Solar Washington volunteer Craig Olson along with SW Executive Director Patrick Nugent presented at Penny Creek Elementary School's annual Science Day in Everett on Thursday, May 30. Solar Washington was one of several other organizations and individuals who presented on various science related topics to elementary school kids throughout the day.
Craig and Patrick taught five 4th grade classes (over 100 students) the basics of electricity (what it powers, where it comes from, where its made, etc.) as well as delved into the basics of solar electricity. The kids were shown slides containing pictures of solar panel installations, a diagram illustrating the process of converting the sun's rays to electricity, and more. Thanks to beautiful weather, the students were treated to hands-on demonstrations with solar-powered motors, a solar backpack and a solar fan. Finally, the presentation concluded with a worksheet where students were asked to match solar vocabulary words with their definitions.
Special thanks to Craig for devoting his time to SW's presence at Penny Creek. Also, a special thanks to Jenni Lamarca from Snohomish PUD for lending the solar demonstration items that day.
