We interviewed new Solar Washington member and Solar Summit volunteer Zoilo Sotero this month.

Solar Washington: When, how and/or why did you become interested in solar? Tell us about any specific experiences with solar.
Zoilo Sotero: My interest was sparked in Environmental Science coursework, where we explored renewable energy and its role in addressing environmental racism. The idea of harnessing the sun’s energy for energy independence in historically marginalized homes and communities, fascinated me. I saw how science made a real difference in West Seattle. Our efficiency experiments and solar data analysis gave me first-hand experience of how solar technology works.
Now I work as a YWCA Career Navigator helping teens and young adults 16-24 start careers in clean energy and skilled trades, with an emphasis on clean energy career pathways such as electrical, HVAC, solar, and project management.

SW: Why did you join Solar Washington and what do you expect from Solar Washington?
ZS: Solar Washington is a community that connects and grows the industry, has lots of resources, and is a great information hub. It is one of the few places where solar enthusiasts, professionals, and curious energy nerds can all mingle and contribute.
SW: What’s next for you regarding solar?
ZS: This spring, I will be part of the 2026 Clean Energy Career Pathways (CECP) internship program in partnership with City of Seattle. If you are thinking of solar as a career, there is room for everyone from designers, installers, scientists, and people who like to carry heavy panels up ladders.
